Supervalu Adopts Best Aquaculture Practices Seafood Certification
Supervalu Inc., one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States, has adopted Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification as part of its comprehensive aquaculture procurement policy.
Supervalu's goal is to work closely with its suppliers and the Global Aquaculture Alliance to ensure that all aquaculture species for which GAA has certification standards are sourced from BAP-certified farms by early 2013.
"We are delighted with the addition of Supervalu to our rapidly growing list of companies that endorse the BAP program," Peter Redmond, BAP vice president of development, said. "The Global Aquaculture Alliance commends Supervalu for making this decision, taking a leading role in the industry and being a strong advocate and voice of change for the company's customers."
"Seafood sustainability is an ongoing commitment at Supervalu, and we are excited to work with GAA on this issue," said Chris Hooks, Supervalu vice president of meat, seafood, dairy and frozen foods. "Expanding our sustainability efforts to include farm-raised seafood is extremely important to ensure we are securing a viable seafood supply for customers, both now and in the future."
Best Aquaculture Practices is an international certification program based on achievable, science-based and continuously improved global performance standards for the entire aquaculture supply chain -- farms, hatcheries, processing plants and feed mills -- that assure healthful foods produced through environmentally and socially responsible means.
