SEAFOOD CHOICES ALLIANCE SEAFOOD SUMMIT

The Seafood Summit is designed "to bridge the gap between the latest science and the reality of the seafood marketplace" by connecting diverse elements of industry with leaders from the conservation community. Summit attendees will include fish farmers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, food professionals, conservation organizations, government representatives and policy makers, academic scientists, and media.

BAP Coordinator Daniel Lee has planned a series of meetings with NGO groups that commented on the Best Aquaculture Practices standards development process and may be interested in participating in the new Standards Oversight Committee. He will also meet with representatives from several retail groups.

INDIA INTERNATIONAL SEAFOOD SHOW

Organized by the Marine Products Export Development Authority in cooperation with Seafood Exporters Association of India, the biennial India International Seafood Show is one of the largest seafood fairs in Asia. Since the first event in 1973, the show has attracted seafood processors, exporters, importers, aquaculturists, machinery manufacturers, and allied industries to exchange ideas and explore further trade relationships. An exhibition of some 100 booths will display a wide variety of products, equipment, and services.

GAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

All GAA corporate members in good standing are invited to attend this Global Aquaculture Alliance board of directors meeting. Scheduled just before the start of the International Boston Seafood Show, it will be held 10:00 a.m. to noon in Meeting Room 252A of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

GAA's Nominating Committee will present a slate of candidates to fill six expiring seats on the GAA board. After a vote by the corporate membership, the newly elected board will elect a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer from among the 12 board members. Other meeting topics will include a budget review, updates on GAA's Best Aquaculture Practices program, and continued discussion of the GOAL 2008 and GOAL 2009 conferences.

BEST AQUACULTURE PRACTICES STANDARDS MEETING

In its continuing series of stakeholder meetings, the Global Aquaculture Alliance invites all interested parties to attend this meeting on the status of the expanding Best Aquaculture Practices program. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the International Boston Seafood Show from 9 to 11 a.m. in Room 252A of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

New BAP standards for channel catfish and tilapia farms are now approaching completion. Hear updates on these and other standards. Express your perspectives on the revised standards development process or propose a nominee for the new Standards Oversight Committee. Another standards meeting will take place at the October 28-31 GOAL 2008 meeting in Qingdao, China.

FAO/NACA/SCA/DFID EXPERT WORKSHOP ON GUIDELINES
FOR AQUACULTURE CERTIFICATION

London, England -- U.K. Department for International Development

This expert workshop on the development of aquaculture certification guidelines will be convened in collaboration with the Seafood Choices Alliance and NACA with the support of the U.K. Department for International Development. Fourth in a series of regional consultations, the event will be a dialogue between the guidelines developers, producing country representatives and stakeholders in Europe, predominantly major retail buyers and processors. The workshop partners seek input on the current draft of the FAO aquaculture guidelines to explore opportunities for cooperation across supply chains.

GAA's Best Aquaculture Practices Standards Coordinator Daniel Lee will make a presentation during the February 28 session titled "European Experiences and Perspectives of Aquaculture Certification." He will speak about the pending BAP "cluster standard" for shrimp farms and the challenges of getting smallholders involved in the certification process.

The strategic objective of the SEAFOODplus program is to reduce health problems and increase well-being among European consumers by applying the benefits obtained through consumption of seafood. Studies are assessing the effects of seafood on cardiovascular, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. A seafood safety component is identifying and evaluating risk factors. An aquaculture component will study the effects of diet, husbandry, fish physiology, and genetics. The SEAFOODplus conference will report progress and results for these program areas.
